How it Works

This course is a customized, on-water training available aboard your vessel. The Captain will come to your location and works with you aboard your boat to build on-water confidence focusing on boat handling & safety.

The price of the course is $700 and allows 1-3 people to be onboard.

No Boat, No Problem!

At The Helm Training has several training boats you can choose from to use for an additional charge.

The price of the course is $700, and has an additional charge for the cost of the training boat. This course allows for 1-2 people onboard (ages 13+).

Our training boat in Stuart, FL is a 24’ Sea Hunt. The St. Lucie River and Stuart Inlet in Florida offer a diverse and captivating boating experience. New engine and electronics, VHF radio, USCG required safety gear and more. We go above and beyond to keep you safe and comfortable so that you can get the most out of your training.

With picturesque landscapes, lush mangroves, and vibrant wildlife, these interconnected waterways provide a scenic backdrop for exploration. Navigating the St. Lucie River allows boaters to encounter various conditions, from protected creeks to swift currents, open waters, and bridges. Apollo Beach, FL

Our Apollo Beach, FL training boat is a 24’ Boston Whaler. New engine and electronics, VHF radio, USCG required safety gear, and more. We go above and beyond to keep you safe and comfortable so that you can get the most out of your training.

Conveniently located near Tampa and St. Petersburg, this scenic inlet is a must-visit for boaters seeking adventure along Florida's Gulf Coast. The convenient location of Tampa Bay Inlet allows boaters to easily explore the surrounding coastal areas and nearby islands.

Owner/Operator Training

6+ Hour

Experience a multi-day, fully immersive course tailored to your specific needs and boat size. This comprehensive course covers a range of topics, including docking techniques, vessel systems, maintenance, trip planning, electronics, safety procedures, close-quarters maneuvering, equipment usage, and a host of other essential skills.

Our course is ideally suited for boat owners with vessels exceeding 40 feet in length. Whether you're a seasoned captain or just upgrading to a larger vessel, this program is designed to elevate your knowledge and expertise.

Multi-Day Owner/ Operator Course

How it Works

This course is a customized, on-water training available aboard your vessel. The Captain will come to your location and works with you aboard your boat.

The price starts at $850 per day. If mate assistance required, $300 additional per day. A Check Ride is $650 per day. 

How Many Days?

This course can range from 2-10 days depending on your boating experience and the size of your vessel.

We have found that the average length of our Owner/Operator Training Course is 5 days, plus a Check Ride.

Insurance Coverage

Most insurance companies require on-water training and a Captain sign-off. Upon completion of your training and Check Ride, a sign-off letter is provided directly to your insurance company.

Boating Safety Education I.D. Card

In the United States, more than 40 states have boater education requirements that must be successfully completed before you can legally operate your recreational vessel on state waters.

You need boating education in Florida if you were born on or after January 1, 1988, and you will be operating a motorized boat of 10 hp or more.

Successfully completing our approved boater safety course keeps you compliant with the boating laws in your state.
